Die Skisprung-Arena war schon nahezu verwaist, als Eric Frenzel aufs Siegertreppchen trat. Vor allem die russischen Zuschauer – und das war die erdrückende Mehrheit auf den Tribünen – nahmen Reißaus, als sie sahen, dass es bei der Nordischen Kombination keinen Heimsieg geben würde. Also tat die Stadionregie dem frisch gekürten Olympiasieger einen Gefallen: Statt „Kalinka, Kalinka“ dudelte jetzt deutschsprachiges Liedgut aus den Boxen – und Frenzel konnte sich zu den „Prinzen“ oder zu Rainhard Fendrichs „Es lebe der Sport“ feiern lassen.

Seinen speziellen Sport, den Mix aus Springen und Laufen, hatte der federleichte Frenzel in dieser Saison derart dominiert, dass er mit der Last des Superfavoriten nach Sotschi reiste. Und dort kroch ihm mit den Triumphen der Alpinfrau Maria Höfl-Riesch oder der Rodler Felix Loch und Natalie Geisenberger von Tag zu Tag ein Gedanke gemeiner in den Kopf. „Der Druck bei Olympia ist mit nichts zu vergleichen. Wenn du dann zudem weißt, dass alle Favoriten ihr Gold schon geholt haben, aber du deinen Wettkampf noch vor dir hast – das ist schon ein mulmiges Gefühl“, erzählte er.

Deutsch-japanisches Duo

Richtig kribbelig in der Magengegend wurde es am Vorabend seines ersten Auftritts. „Er war schon ein bisschen aufgeregt“, bestätigte Teamkollege Fabian Rießle, der Achter wurde, als drittbester Deutscher hinter Johannes Rydzek (6.) und vor Tino Edelmann (9.). „Da haben wir schon versucht, ihm ein wenig zu helfen“, fügte der 23-jährige Schwarzwälder hinzu, entdeckte aber rasch den ihm bekannten Frenzel wieder: „Das ist so ein ruhiger Kerl, so abgeklärt, dem muss man gar nicht groß helfen.“

Denn das bekommt das kombinierende Nonplusultra dieses Winters schon selbst hin. Mit der beeindruckenden Referenz von sieben Weltcupsiegen in dieser Saison war der 25-Jährige angereist, und bei der Variante von der Normalschanze bekam er zudem Unterstützung aus Japan. Mit minimalem Vorsprung von sechs Sekunden auf Akito Watabe ging Frenzel als Führender nach dem Springen in die Spur, das übrige Feld lag bereits 27 Sekunden und mehr hinter dem deutsch-japanischen Duo zurück.

"Frenzel war einfach zu stark"

„Wir haben vorher besprochen, dass wir uns die anderen vom Leib halten wollen“, erzählte Watabe später. Den Plan setzten sie konsequent in die Tat um, näher als 13 Sekunden ließen sie den Verfolger-Pulk nicht herankommen – und auf dem letzten Anstieg unternahm der Asiate dann den Versuch, Frenzel zu enteilen. Das wagemutige Unternehmen schlug fehl: „Er war einfach zu stark“, stellte Watabe fest, freute sich aber trotzdem: „Das war ein gutes Rennen.“

Im Anschluss an dieses schöne Erlebnis durfte der Sieger noch einen medialen Steilpass aufnehmen. Ob er sich als Olympiasieger in seiner anspruchsvollen Doppel-Disziplin nun als König der Wintersportler fühle, wurde der zweimalige Weltmeister gefragt. Eric Frenzel nahm das Zuspiel dankend auf und erwähnte, dass er in der Zeitung „USA Today“ in der vergangenen Woche ein Ranking der härtesten Wintersportarten entdeckt habe. „Die Nordische Kombination war da die Nummer eins“, sagte er. Und, ja: „Wir machen einen wirklich harten Job. Deshalb sind die Kombinierer für uns die Könige der nordischen Sportarten.“
