Kombinierer Eric Frenzel gewinnt nach Meisterleistung Gold

Krasnaja Poljana. Eric Frenzel war auch in der olympischen Kombination nicht zu bezwingen. Der Seriensieger setzte sich dank seines entschlossenen Antritts kurz vor dem Ziel vor dem Japaner Watabe durch. Auch die drei übrigen Deutschen kamen unter die Top Ten.

Topfavorit Eric Frenzel hat am Mittwoch bei den Olympischen Winterspielen in Sotschi nach einer taktischen Meisterleistung die Goldmedaille im Einzelwettbewerb der nordischen Kombination gewonnen. Der 25-Jährige siegte nach einem Sprung von der Normalschanze und dem 10-Kilometer-Langlauf vor dem Japaner Akito Watabe. Mit seiner entscheidenden Attacke kurz vor dem Stadion setzte sich Frenzel von seinem Widersacher ab und machte das erste deutsche Kombinations-Gold seit Georg Hettichs Triumph 2006 in Turin perfekt. Bronze holte der Norweger Magnus Krog

"Es ist genau so gelaufen wie erhofft. Großartig!", jubelte Bundestrainer Hermann Weinbuch im ZDF über den Triumph seines Vorzeige-Athleten Frenzel. "Der Druck war enorm groß auf den Eric, weil er die letzten sechs Weltcups gewonnen habt. Als Zweiter wärst du da der erste Verlierer, dass er das packt, unglaublich, Hut ab.

Den Grundstein zum Gold-Gewinn hatte der Bronzemedaillengewinner mit der Mannschaft von Vancouver mit einem Satz auf 103 Meter von der Schanze gelegt. "Ein Hund ist er schon, so einen rauszuhauen", lobte Weinbuch. Und auch DOSB-Präsident Alfons Hörmann war angetan von Frenzels Dynamik auf der Schanze: "Ein Supersprung. Er hat gezeigt, dass er in Topform ist."

Rydzek mischt vorne mit

Auf der extrem anspruchsvollen Strecke machten vor allem der Norweger Magnus Moan und der Italiener Alessandro Pittin zwar viel Druck und verkürzten den Rückstand, doch an Frenzel und Watabe konnten sie nicht mehr heranlaufen.

Auch die anderen deutschen Kombinierer kamen unter die Top Ten. Johannes Rydzek kam mit 17 Sekunden Rückstand als Sechster ins Ziel. "Es war ein cooles Rennen. Es war ein geniales Feeling, da ganz vorne mitzumischen", erklärte der Oberstdorfer Rydzek. Auch Fabian Riessle als Achter war happy: "Es war ein richtig geiles Rennen. Auf den letzten paar hundert Metern haben leider die Kräfte gefehlt." Einen Rang hinter dem 23-Jährigen kam Tino Edelmann aus Zella-Mehlis als Neunter ins Ziel. (dpa)
