Basketball-Nationalspieler Niels Giffey hat zum zweiten Mal die prestigeträchtige College-Meisterschaft in den USA gewonnen. Am Montag (Ortszeit) entschied der 22-Jährige mit den Connecticut Huskies das Endspiel gegen die Kentucky Wildcats mit 60:54 (35:31) für sich.
UConn lag vor 79.238 Zuschauern im Football-Stadion von Arlington im Bundesstaat Texas die komplette Spielzeit über nie in Rückstand. Flügelspieler Giffey steuerte in seinem letzten College-Spiel zehn Punkte und fünf Rebounds zum Erfolg bei. "Wir haben die Meisterschaft zurück nach Connecticut geholt. Das ist unglaublich", sagte er. Ersatzmann Leon Tolksdorf wurde von Trainer Kevin Ollie nicht eingesetzt. Giffey war bereits 2011 mit Connecticut Meister geworden, damals stand auch Enosch Wolf im Kader.
