Reykjavik. Island hat sich mit einer wackeren Defensivleistung den Traum von der ersten WM-Teilnahme bewahrt. Gegen die mit vier Bundesliga-Profis angetretenen Kroaten kam der große Außenseiter am Freitagabend im Playoff-Hinspiel im heimischen Laugardsvöllur von Reykjavik zu einem 0:0.

Islands Traum von der ersten Teilnahme an der Endrunde einer Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft lebt weiter. Die 'Eismänner' erkämpften sich im hitzigen Play-off-Hinspiel gegen Kroatien ein 0:0 und sind vor allem dank einer leidenschaftlichen Defensiv-Leistung weiter im Rennen um ein Ticket für das Turnier in Brasilien. Kroatien verpasste beim Debüt des ehemaligen Bundesliga-Stars Niko Kovac als Nationaltrainer das wichtige Auswärtstor und schlug auch aus einem Platzverweis der Isländer kein Kapital.

Mittelfeldspieler Olafur Skulason war in der 50. Minute mit der Roten Karte des Feldes verwiesen worden. Der 30-Jährige hatte den enteilten Wolfsburger Bundesliga-Profi Ivan Perisic im Sprint kurz vor dem Strafraum mit den Händen zu Boden gerissen - Schiedsrichter Alberto Mallenco aus Spanien entschied auf Notbremse und heizte die kampfbetonte Begegnung damit weiter an.

Skulason fliegt vom Platz

Angepeitscht von rund 12.000 lautstarken Fans im Nationalstadion von Reykjavik hatte Island mutig begonnen, im Spielaufbau aber zu planlos agiert und die kroatische Defensive zunächst vor keine ernsthaften Schwierigkeiten gestellt. Die Kroaten, bei denen neben Perisic auch die Bundesliga-Akteure Mario Mandzukic (Bayern München) und Ivo Ilicevic (Hamburger SV) in der Startformation standen, gewannen nach der hektischen Anfangsphase zunehmend an Sicherheit. Die Offensivaktionen der Kroaten brachten zunächst aber nichts ein.

Nach Skulasons Platzverweis spielte sich die Partie fast ausschließlich in der Hälfte Islands ab. Kroatien drückte auf den Treffer und kam dabei zu zahlreichen gefährlichen Szenen, die von Trainer-Urgestein Lars Lagerbäck betreuten Isländer beschränkten sich weitgehend auf Ergebnisverwaltung und retteten das torlose Unentschieden über die Zeit.

Das Rückspiel findet am kommenden Dienstag in Kroatiens Hauptstadt Zagreb statt. (dpa/sid)
